Newport, Oregon Coast Aquarium

Diane and I are spending a short week in and around Newport, Oregon. Today we visited the Oregon Coast Aquarium. We also visited the original Yaquina Bay lighthouse and Nye Beach. And we spent some time sitting in our camp chairs in the sun and reading.

We waited in line to get in but it was worth the wait. The first part was animals that live on the rocks and bottom. Starfish, sea urchins, flatfish and crabs. They even have displays where you can touch some of the sea creatures. The next display was the aviary.

Mostly puffins.
After the birds we headed to see the seals and otters. This is laid out so you can see them from both above the water and below, while they are swimming. The otters come right up to the glass.

The coolest part was a tunnel that went through the aquarium with the fish swimming all the way around you. Lots of different fish, including some sharks.

All in all it was a morning well spent. These last couple of pictures are just some man-made things at the aquarium. The first one is a dining room they have where you can eat while watching what is going on in the aquarium. Pretty neat to eat in a fish tank! The second one is some divers doing clean-up and maintenance in the tank. The diver on the right has the job of using a pole to fend off the sharks from the other two who are doing the work.

This last one is the estuary at Yaquina Bay where the Oregon Coast Aquarium is located. It's a beautiful spot.
