Mt. Rainier, Longmire

Park details.

Longmire is where the first accommodations at the park were and actually predate the park it self. Longmire family built a spa and resort here where a mineral spring was located in the 1890's. This became the first lodgings in the park. Longmire's daughter also named Paradise which became the main area of the park.

The building below was originally the annex for the main hotel. The hotel burned down in the 1920's and the annex was moved to that location and became the main hotel in the park. The view of the mountain from this porch is fantastic. This is the back porch of the hotel.

Main entrance to the Inn.

Gas station in the park as auto travel became more common. The first trips into the park and tours were conducted by horseback and wagons. It took 2 days to get from Longmire, at the park entrance, to the Paradise Vallley. Currently there is no gas or automotive services available in the park.

This was built in the 1920's as the park administration building. That function has moved to Ashford which is about 8 miles from the park and closest town with services on the west side of the park. It houses the back country permit operation and vistor information.

Log cabin built by Longmire family on the edge of the hot springs.

Walk through the tall trees around the Longmire meadow. The meadow has the mineral springs in it that was the reason for building the inn.
